St. Landry Parish Paralysis Lawyer
The spinal cord connects the brain with the rest of the body and has control of much of the movement and sensations that people experience on a daily basis. Injuries to the spinal cord can have a traumatic effect on a person's ability to live and work normally, and in the worst cases, can cause paralysis or death. Spinal cord injuries are often caused by car and other motor vehicle accidents. They can also occur on the job or in other accidents that are the result of negligence or misconduct. Recovery from a spinal cord injury can take years, or in the worst cases, long term effects of a spinal cord injury may not be reversible.
Obtaining compensation for a spinal cord injury is critical to the ability to pay for treatment, rehabilitation, and other medical expenses. There are two types of spinal cord injuries: complete and incomplete. Complete spinal cord injuries eliminate sensation and voluntary movement beneath the level of the injury on either side of the body. Incomplete spinal injuries allow victims to retain some feeling or movement in that area of the body.
Spinal cord injuries may result in:
- Herniated, ruptured, or slipped discs
- Whiplash
- Sciatica
- Paralysis
- Paraplegia
- Quadriplegia
The degree of the injury is based upon the way in which the spinal cord has been damaged and the individual circumstances relating to the injured person and the accident. Depending on the location and the severity of the injuries, an injured person may have permanent or temporary loss of motor and nerve function, which includes a loss of sensation and motion in the legs and hips, as well as the reproductive and excretory systems. In some cases, this function may be recovered, but it is rare for all functioning to be recovered.
