Oil Platform Fire Leads to Worker Injuries Off Louisiana Coast

Two oil workers in the Gulf of Mexico, around 100 miles from the coast of Louisiana, were recently injured after a fire broke out on the oil platform they were working on, the Shell Enchilada platform. The fire broke out in early November and led to an evacuation of 46 workers from the platform. The two injured workers, a 54-year-old man and a 29-year-old man, suffered flash burns and a concussion, respectively. They were evacuated by helicopter to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. In the wake of the fire, Royal Dutch Shell shut down four oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, including Shell Enchilada. There is no current timeline for resumption of operations. Distracted Driving Leads to Deadly Louisiana Car Crash

Louisiana was recently rated one of the worst states in the U.S. when it comes to distracted driving. And sadly, it seems as though distracted driving has claimed another victim, this one a 5-month-old child. In October 2017, a 23-year-old woman who was texting and driving slammed her vehicle into another vehicle occupied by a mother and the 5-month-old boy. The force of the crash pushed the mother’s vehicle into another one nearby, seriously injuring the baby. Two days later, the baby died at the hospital. Police issued warrants for the 23-year-old woman’s arrest for negligent homicide, negligent injuring and reckless operation in November. After the warrants came out, the distracted driver turned herself in.
