The Grand Theater shooting has not only rocked our community but has left many of us with disturbing questions. Why did the gunman go on a rampage? Was there a problem with the theater’s security? How can I stay safe at the theater? Though many of these questions cannot be answered, the lawyers of Galloway and Jefcoat want to help you feel safer in our happy town, and so we have gathered some tips and information.
What Can I Do To Survive A Theater Shooting?
When you go to a movie, there are several safety measures you can take to keep yourself a little safer.
- Be sure to tell others where you are going. It never hurts for someone to know where you are in case of an emergency.
- Put your phone on vibrate rather than turning it off. Not having to wait for your phone to start up can save valuable time when trying to call the authorities.
- Know where the exits are. If you are stuck in an emergency situation, getting away can be a crucial key to survival, so know where to go if chaos erupts.
Local police also recommend that you always run away from the source of the disaster, and not toward it. It is the job of the police to engage dangerous elements, and you should not take matters into your own hands.
Where Can I Go To Get Help?
Our Lafayette Consolidated Government has also opened a Family Information Center to help our community cope with this tragedy. The center is located at 911 Lee Ave, where the Whitney Bank used to be, and will be open from 8 am to 8 pm, seven days a week. We urge anyone feeling emotional distress, whether it is connected to the shooting or not, to get the help they need.
