Vermillion Parish and St. Bernard Parish were connected by similar tragedies a few weeks ago. A person in each parish died of injuries sustained in very similar motorcycle accidents.
In Vermillion Parish, a single 35-year-old Lafayette man was unable to avoid a collision when a car took a left hand turn in front of his motorcycle. That man died from the injuries sustained in the crash.
In St. Bernard Parish, two men were riding a dirt bike on the road when a Dodge truck took a left hand turn in front of them. Both rider and passenger were ejected from their motorcycle when it collided with the truck, and were taken to LSU Interim Hospital. Unfortunately the passenger in this crash succumbed to his injuries. He was 18 years old.
Is This A Common Type Of Motorcycle Accident?
Crashes like these are actually very common when riding a motorcycle. It is estimated that left-hand turn crashes make up about 42 percent of all motorcycle car collisions, and it is estimated that 36 percent of fatal accidents involve a car taking a left-hand turn in front of a motorcyclist.
