WWL-TV reported on a drunk driver who allegedly caused a fatal multi-vehicle car accident on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in March. According to the WWL-TV report, the crash happened around 2:30 am. The drunk driver hit a truck with her car, which caused the truck to crash into a guardrail. The driver of the truck died in the wreck. Reportedly, the drunk driver, whose license was suspended because of two prior driving while intoxicated (DWI) convictions, is facing vehicular manslaughter charges because of the deadly collision.
Should I Still Talk to a Lawyer If the Drunk Driver Who Hit Me Is Facing Criminal Charges?
While it is important that people who drink and drive arrested, a criminal conviction does not help their victims and their families with hospital bills, rehabilitation expenses and funeral costs. However, a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit can provide victims and families with the financial assistance they need to cover accident-related expenses.
Victims do not have to wait until the criminal case is decided to file a wrongful death or personal injury lawsuit. In addition, the burden of proof in civil lawsuits, such as wrongful death and personal injury cases, is less than it is for criminal lawsuits, which means that it can be less difficult for victims and their families to hold drunk drivers accountable for their negligence.
