The tragic death of a Louisiana teen driver raises the question as to whether a seatbelt might have saved his life. The young man was driving down a local highway when he lost control of the vehicle. He attempted to avoid swerving off of the road, but instead he over-corrected and crashed into a nearby canal. Since he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, he was ejected from the car and killed. The police are still investigating, but it does not appear the boy was in anyway impaired at the time of the crash.
Seatbelts Save Lives
This young man did his best to correct and prevent an accident, but crashes cannot always be avoided. You need to take every possible precaution to ensure that you will be protected in the event of an accident. The numbers suggest that not wearing a seatbelt is the single biggest cause of automobile deaths in the country. Of the 32,598 annual traffic deaths reported by the National Highway Safety Administration, 32,598 were instances where the victim was not wearing a seatbelt. It is truly disheartening to consider how many of these lives might have been saved.
A seatbelt would have kept this young man in the vehicle, and potentially limited the damages to minor injuries. Louisiana law requires all passengers and drivers to wear their seatbelts at all times, but in order to make sure this law works, we all need to encourage and remind our loved ones to buckle up.
Seatbelts Are a Huge Factor for Louisiana Teen Drivers
Unfortunately, it is very common for young people not to wear seatbelts. In fact, data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows that teens are less likely than any other group to buckle up. Only 55 percent of American teenagers report to regularly wearing a seatbelt. There are likely several reasons why this is the case. Perhaps, in early phases of life, it is difficult to imagine the impact of a terrible accident. Maybe these kids are simply less experienced with safety precautions than older drivers. Whatever the reason, we all need to do our part to encourage young people to buckle up. The difference could be life or death.
