Did Texting Cause This Lafayette Bus Crash?

Is texting and driving to blame for this accident? In mid-October, a truck driven by a young Lafayette woman slammed into a motorcycle and pushed it into a school bus. Three victims, including the motorcyclist, were taken to the hospital. The motorcyclist suffered a broken pelvis and injured his lower spine. He is now unable to work or take care of his two children. According to investigators, the driver of the truck never slowed down when approaching the motorcycle and the bus. Why? She was texting while driving. She has been charged with reckless operation, negligent injuring, texting while driving and failing to wear a seat belt. The motorcyclist has since pledged to take any settlement or verdict he receives for his injuries and use it to start a program to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. Why Is Louisiana One of the Only States with School Bus Seat Belt Laws?

Only a few states in the United States – Louisiana, New York, California, Florida, New Jersey and Texas – have laws requiring seat belts on school buses. Why is that? Wouldn’t it make more sense for these vehicles, overwhelming used to keep kids safe on the way to and from school, to have one of the most important safety features available in passenger cars? Both laws were, in some form, responses to tragic bus accidents that killed students. This recent law was written in response to the wrongful deaths of Janecia Chatman and Mariya Johnson, students who died when a school bus went flying from an overpass. Neither girl was wearing a seat belt at the time – most seat belts, to date, do not have…

Did a Bus Driver’s Mistake Cause a Deadly Bus-Train Wreck?

The SunHerald recently updated the story involving the deadly bus-train wreck that took place a few weeks back. Per the report in the SunHerald, the driver behind the wheel of the tour bus at the time it collided with the train may have taken a detour from the approved route provided to him by the tour company prior to the fatal incident. Could This Fatal Bus-Train Wreck Have Been Avoided? According to the SunHerald, while it has been revealed that the bus driver did not follow the approved route, investigators are still unsure why he took the detour. The original route would have avoided the railroad crossing where the fatal bus-train wreck occurred. The railroad crossing had a history of incidents involving vehicles becoming stuck, which is what happened to the bus before the train crashed into it. Reportedly, the tour bus company texted the driver the directions. However, the…
