How Could Holiday Travel Put You at Higher Risk for a Drowsy Driving Accident?

Last year, the American Automobile Association (AAA) estimated there to be 97.4 million road trips across the United States between December 23 and January 1. Is Drowsy Driving the Same as Drunk Driving?

A study recently conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving. According to data from the study, if drivers get one to two hours less sleep than they should, it doubles their risk of being in a car wreck. If drivers lose two or three hours of sleep, they have the same accident risk as drunk drivers. Per the study, on average, annually in the US more than one of every five fatal auto accidents involves drowsy driving. Could a Few Hours Less Sleep Cause a Car Crash?

We all know about the dangers of drunk driving, but safety experts seem to have a harder time convincing the public that drowsy driving can also cause a car crash. For years, experts have stressed that Americans need to be more careful about getting behind the wheel while tired. A recent study shows that things might actually be worse than previously thought. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that even small amounts of sleep deprivation may put you in danger. The study shows that if you get 5 or 6 hours of sleep, you are twice as likely to get in a car accident than if you get 7 hours or more.
