How Wireless Communication Can Reshape Road Safety

And while the crown jewel of the automobile revolution – the autonomous vehicle – usually lives in the limelight, there are other promising new developments that can help increase road safety. One of these is wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

This technology works by beaming signals like radio waves and Wi-Fi between vehicles so that the vehicles can share information with one another. This information can include things like speed, location and traffic conditions. Utilizing this information can help a vehicle adjust its safety systems to safely navigate hazards and traffic.

Groups including the government have looked at this kind of safety feature with caution in the past, worried that there could be other issues (privacy, hacking) that could make this kind of technology undesirable. However, the idea is becoming more and more popular, and even the U.S. Department of Transportation has released guidelines relating to wireless car communication and vehicle safety.

Combining wireless communication with other increasingly common safety features, like automatic braking and driver assistance, can help create a network of vehicles working in tandem to protect their drivers and passengers. These features can help eliminate human error, the cause of over 90 percent of car accidents.
