A Day in the Life of an Attorney: Kim Souriyakhamphong

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be an attorney? Here is a day in the life of our very own Kimberly Souriyakhamphong!

Alarm goes off.  Stumble out of bed. Grab my gym clothes and a banana. Hope that my work clothes are ironed.

While walking into the gym, review my calendar.

Drive to work while obeying all lawful traffic signs and speed limits.

Starving. If I’m breathing, I’m hungry. Greet everyone in the office. Rusty Galloway comes into my office, “Good morning Ms. Souriyakhamphong (pronounces it correctly).”

Review medical records since I am the unofficial healthcare expert here. Render an opinion based on the medical records for our class action department.

Draft a lawsuit. Right plaintiff? Check. Right venue? Check?

Answer emails.

Answer phone calls. [RING]

Answer questions from staff.

Start drafting settlement demand letters. One of my favorite tasks.

Gather warm, fuzzy blankets to distribute to a local nursing home.

Hand out warm, fuzzy blankets, great smelling lotion, and fun activities to the residents. #AdoptaNursingHomeResidentforChristmas

Grab a protein shake since I skipped lunch.

Return text messages from clients.

[DING] Missed 5 phone calls from the same client. Call back client. No response.

Start drafting discovery responses. Call the client to schedule an appointment. Client does not pick up. Nobody does in a spam world. Sends client an e-mail, e-mail bounces back. Leaves client a voicemail.

Sends text message to client to schedule an appointment.

Client answers immediately.

1:37 - 4:00pm:

Continue typing discovery responses. Meeting with the boss. Return to typing.  Phone call from potential immigration client. Tries to schedule appointment, potential client will call around town first. Potential client demands quote for possible immigration case. “Case by case basis” is not the answer they are looking for.

Read over summary of Moot Court arguments for undergraduate students competition in a local competition. Zoom through them again. I think the lines were blurry.

Students show up to argue their case. I think they are better than me. Such zeal, I’m very impressed. “Justice Souriyakhamphong, May it please the court…” Sounds nice.

Narrow down the winners for the moot court competition.  Give honest but polite reviews on their presentation.

New client’s documents reviewed, papers prepared.

“Did I forget to do something today?”
